Deadmen Walking

Captain Devyl Bane is ready for a fight and it's going to be one Hell of a good time.

" One more thing. Captain any pointers how we're to win this."
"Don't die. Be the last man standing."
"Good to know. Pointers how to kill them, then?"
"Cut off the head. If that doesn't work? Run like hell, preferably faster than the poor bloke beside you. Might want to consider tripping him if he proves to be faster."
"Beautiful. I so look forward to these deep, meaningful discussions and motivational speeches from you that leave me bullocks completely shrunk and shriveled."

Deadmen Walking is the first novel in Sherrilyn Kenyon's new Deadmen's Cross series. It's going to take evil to catch evil. Devyl Bane a dark powerful warlord has been returned to the human realm to capture ancient creatures and send them back to Hell. But things are not what they seem as Cameron Jack soon realizes. Cameron is in need of the captain's help to find her brother Paden and she'll do anything, including climbing aboard the Sea Witch.  She quickly finds herself surrounded by beings she never new existed. They are the Deadmen a group of the damned under the charge of Devyl Bane, they are the only thing standing between the humans and utter destruction. But this task might not be as easy as the Deadmen had hoped, Devyl's evil ex-wife is looking for revenge and their ship just happens to be her sister. Cameron's brother isn't the only one in trouble. If the captain can't find away to make things right the whole world is going to go very wrong.

Review
Sherrilyn Kenyon's first novel in Deadmen's Cross series was a brand new take on pirates. Deadmen Walking was a fun read. I was never a fan of Kenyon's previous work, but when I saw this book I thought I'd give her another chance and I'm so glad I did. I really did like this book and it was because of one thing, the characters. They are this rag tag bunch of damned souls working together to regain their humanity I loved the dynamic between Bane and his crew, as much as they annoy him with their idiocy the more he seems to care for him. It's almost as if he looks on them as his obnoxious family. They are always picking on each other and making jokes and I can't wait for another book just so I can learn more about them. Even though I enjoyed this book there were some things I wasn't fond of. The biggest problem to me was all the different mythologies and lore.  There were so many that I found myself getting a little confused , there was so much of it thrown together that I felt dragged down. All in all I think Deadmen Walking was enjoyable and I look forward to read the next one.

Whit Hot

Nevada Baylor is back and she's about to learn that the world is a cold place.

In the second installment of The Hidden Legacy series Nevada Baylor and her quirky family are back. Last we saw, Nevada and Mad Rogan had just captured Adam Pierce and saved Houston from fiery destruction. Now that the Pierce case is behind her Nevada believes she can get on with her life. Boy is she wrong. After donning a cape and mask and helping find a missing little girl Nevada is spent, using her magic and keeping it secret can take a lot out of a girl. But once she gets home she finds getting sleep might not be that easy when her doorbell rings and standing on her doorstep is none other than Cornelius Harrison Adam Pierce's "boyhood companion" and animal mage. He and his daughter Matilda are need of Baylor Investigations services. Nari Harrison, Cornelius' wife and Matilda's mother has been murdered along with three other lawyers working for House Forsberg and no one will tell them why. The Baylors are sucked back in to danger where a Psychrokentic Prime, an ice mage, and a psionic Prime, a will manipulative mage, are conspiring to rain chaos down on Houston and the only man who can keep them alive is Connor "Mad" Rogan. The tension between Nevada and Rogan is  undeniable but these two might never get a chance if they don't figure out who's behind the killings and why.

Review
Ilona Andrews has done it again. I have been waiting for White Hot to be released for three long years and I was trilled to get my hands on this book. I didn't think I could love these characters more, Boy Howdy was dead wrong. Where Burn for Me sizzled, White Hot gave me chills from page one and kept me wanting more till the very end. Nevada has only gotten stronger and her family crazier and I so badly want to step into their world and join in the hijinks. There's no one character I don't love and want to know more about. Whit Hot had me laughing out loud. Leon's commentary of the insane battle that was brought to the Baylor's front door was the best part of any book I have read in a long while. Connor "Mad" Rogan is becoming one of my favorite book boyfriends. As always Ilona Andrews mixes action, humor, and a great deal of heart in her work leaving jonesing for another dose of this magical world.

Burn for Me

Nevada Baylor is stuck between a rock and a hot place and there's only one man who can help get her out alive.

Nevada Baylor finds herself in over head when the corporation that owns her family's P.I. firm tasks her with bringing in a Prime pyrokinetic or lose not only her family's business, but their home as well. Primes are the highest ranking magic users and Adam Pierce is not only deadly but also an attention junkie. His disregard for the rules has already killed one man and he doesn't look to be quitting anytime soon. Nevada thinks things can't get any worse but she finds she's not the only one on the trail of Pierce. Connor "Mad" Rogan a darkly, tempting Prime kidnaps Nevada and they realize they're each others best to catch Pierce. Sparks fly and this pair is up against the clock to bring Adam Pierce in or the city of Houston will pay the price.

Review
May I just start by saying the Kate Daniels series is one of my favorites. Ilona Andrews knows how to create kick-ass heroines. I was super excited when  this series was released and I was not disappointed. The Hidden Legacy series is full of magic, sexy flirty men, and a whole lot of heart. The women in this book run the show from Nevada being a head strong young woman charged with keeping a roof over her family's head, her mother  military sharpshooter veteran, to Nevada's flirtatious grease monkey grandmother. I absolutely love all the characters. This book has it all and I'm so excited for book number two.

On the night of her thirtieth birthday Lizzie Brown just wants to get dressed up go to dinner with her friends and maybe do a little flirting with the hot guy from her gym, but Lizzie's Granma Gertie has different plans and seems so does a despicable demon. Lizzie doesn't know it but she's a demon slayer and the only one who can save her grandma's coven from Vald a fifth level demon hell bent on revenge.  Now on the run with her biker grandmother and talking Jack Russell  Terrier, Pirate, these three set out on an adventure to not only save themselves but the world from evil.

Review
To me this book had more ups than downs. The speed is fairly quick moving and the dialogue is witty and fun. I did find the main character Lizzie to be a little whiney, but she won points for big heart and bravery. I must say a coven full of old biker witches with smart mouths, bad attitude, and questionable fashion sense was a fresh take on grandmothers worldwide. But the reason this book was so likeable to me was one four pawed, lovable Pirate. He stole my heart from his first word and every time he spoke it was pure comedy. I loved him he made this book truly smile worthy.

I recommend this book for anyone who likes sassy old ladies, talking pets, star wars references, and loyal families.
