Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Sookie Stackhouse is just a simple waitress in a small town Louisiana bar. But Sookie is more than a crazy blonde, she's a telepath. Being able to hear thoughts can be exhausting but that all changes when Bill walks into her bar. Bill's a vampire and when Sookie's around him all she hears is silence. Then girls start being murdered and the wo prime suspects are the two men closest to Sookie her boyfriend Bill and her brother Jason. Sookie must use her powers to find the real killer before someone she loves is arrested or worse killed.
The character of Sookie Stackhouse is one of the most believable characters I've read. And to make it better she's not a damsels waiting to be saved nor is she a hard ass who wanders into danger just to fight a battle. She's an everyday girl who fights for her family and fights when backed into a corner. My favorite part of this book is how Sookie will laugh in the faces of vampires. It's not that she's clueless, she's just unfazed. I like that.
